Phonology Studios mini-documentary

Delia print

I'm taking a class this weekend at the Center for Book Arts on lo-tech polymer printmaking. So far, so good! Today we drew on film negatives with X-acto knives, burned the drawings onto plates and printed them on the letterpress. Tons of fun.

Here's my drawing of Delia Derbyshire (lifted from this photo) and its plate and print:

Commander USA: a look back

"Commander USA's Groovie Movies" is unfamiliar ground to me, but from the looks of things, it seems it was a contemporary of the Elvira and "Up All Night" shows, as a part of the last major wave of weekend B-movie institutions on TV in the tail end of the 1980s.

To that end, is Joe Bob Briggs' show, the last of the pack, still on the air? The commentary tracks on his DVDs are always great--"Hell's Angels '69" is unwatchable without it.

Anyway, there are a ton of "Commander USA" clips on You Tube. If the videos above tickle your fancy, click away.

Open question: do any of you know of a show on TV and/or online that presents Grade B movies with an entertaining host in the grand old tradition? If so, pass whatever information you've got my way! Thanks in advance.

The CPP played last night

The Christian Pirate Puppets played at the tough-to-find Brookyn Tea Party last night on a quadruple CD release party bill with Nan and the One Night Stands, Dave End and Major Matt (with The Leader)! It was an awesome time.

If you were one of the people taking photos, get in touch!

Our new CD, "Digital Penis," is out now (ltd. ed. of 60) on Unicorn Sounds/Colonial. There are still a few copies of our lathe cut 7" floating around, too. As they say, Buy It Now!

The New Time

They could be old hat to everyone reading this, but if you're not hip to The New Time yet, be sure to give 'em a shake before the day is up. Jess and I just heard "Mississippi Halfstep" on Bob Brainen's show. Catchy stuff!

Whoever made it, great job!

New Shamblers songs!

The Shamblers rehearsed a few hours ago and came up with some great new songs: "Panther Culture Vulture," "Doo Wop Stole My Girl" and "I Rolled a Two," our ode to Gary Gygax.

I apologize for the boring post--no photos, no videos, no MP3s--but you'll hear these tunes soon enough! Hits across the board!

TWO SHAMBLERS SHOWS THIS WEEK:

Wednesday at Maxwell's in Hoboken with !No Parsan!

Friday at Union Hall with Great Lakes

eBay pick of the day: the Pope's RCA BN-2A

An RCA BN-2A Radio Vaticana S.C.V. tube mixer

From the listing:

"This is one of the 15 mixers RCA BN-2A owned from the Vatican Radio from the beginning of the ’60 to the '80, that was used to transmit the Pope’s cerimonies from the St. Peter's cathedral, Basilica di San Pietro. This mean that through this mixer has passed the voice of 4 Popes, Pope Giovanni XXIII- Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli (1958-1963); Pope Paolo VI- Giovanni Battista Montini (1963-1978); Pope Giovanni Paolo I - Albino Luciani (1978) and Pope Giovanni Paolo II- Karol Wojtyla (1978-2005)."

Fifty grand and it's yours!

eBay pick of the day: Goya "Boom Box"

Goya "Boom Box" bass booster

Just the ticket to add a little oomph to that 505 you got a good deal on. Actually, mixing the outputs-- with one channel running clean and the other through the "Boom Box" and then into a cheap gate pedal with a severe threshold setting-- might be just what the doctor ordered for that machine!

On a completely unrelated side note, does anyone know where I can score a pitch-to-voltage converter for cheap? Doepfer's A-119 isn't exactly what I'm looking for, but it's definitely along the right lines. If you can recommend something, please do. Thanks!

Professional wedding photos

As you may or may not know, Jess and I were married this past Friday at City Hall in Manhattan. It just so happened that a reporter and photographer from the New York Times were on hand, writing a story on Leap Day weddings.

A few of our quotes ended up in the article (which you can read here), but the photos did not. Here are four of them, taken by the very friendly, very talented and very cold (it was 10 degrees out) Christian Hansen.

Thanks again, Christian! Hope to see you at one of the Shamblers shows this month!
